Uses of Capacitors

From Leyden Jar to Modern Capacitors

The Leyden Jar in 1746 can be considered the precursor to the modern capacitor – more than 50 years before Allesandro Volta developed the Voltaic pile (precursor to the battery).

Not much use at the time, they have now shrunk in size and are a critical component in most electrical devices. Combine them with an inductor and you can make the current undergo SHM.

Power Your Knowledge

Capacitors are key to both theoretical and practical electrical physics. With clear lessons and real examples, you’ll gain the confidence to analyse capacitor behaviour and apply this knowledge to circuits and exams!
