History of Science IV: The electrical war (Wed 2nd Sept @ 5:00pm)
Can you imagine going a day without using electricity? It turns out that it’s only in the last 140 years that people have been using electricity to power light bulbs. Even though they’d figured out how to create it, store it and use it, it’ll be a few more years before we’d figure out what’s actually happening inside those wires. It;ll be the effect these wires have on a compass needle that’ll further our understanding of the nature of light…
Charge and Current (Sat 5th Sept @ 10:30am)
Since the invention of the voltaic pile in 1800 (aka battery) we’ve been able to construct circuits and find ways to transfer energy into various forms using numerous components. Along the way we’ve discovered rules that electricity obeys, this allows us to predict how the electricity will flow and thus design even more complicated electrical circuits over 100 years. All the while not knowing what’s actually doing the waving.
Energy, Power & Resistance (Sat 12th Sept @ 10:30am)
Last lesson we learnt the first rule of being an electron: electrons don’t like each other! This lesson we’ll learn the 2nd and 3rd rules, which will allow us to derive circuit rules for resistors in series and parallel, as well as introducing emf, internal resistance and potential dividers – traditionally the hardest part of AS electricity
Electric Circuits (Sat 19th Sept @ 10:30am)
Now we know how to control the path of electrons and how to make them transfer energy into many different forms, we can start building useful circuits. Understanding properties of thermistors and LDRs means we can implement them in potential divider circuits so we can automate processes such as lights that turn on when it gets dark and heaters which can be set to maintain a particular temperature in an oven etc…

The way you taught electricity, by personifying the electrons, made the lessons engaging and more memorable for sure. It’s now easier to make links between those analogies and has improved my understanding of Kirchhoff’s laws.
Whenever you mentioned a definition should be memorised using a flashcard – I went away and made it. I’ve now stopped losing marks on definitions.
I used to fear the multiple choice questions in exams, but we practiced a lot of them in the course under timed conditions. I developed the habit of doing this independently, and now spend only a minute on average on them.
AS Physics in 24 lessons
I know “procrastination” is repeated. I could argue that it’s such a big barrier to success that it bears repeating, but the honest answer is I couldn’t convince the AI generator to make the correction. Anyway, I’m sticking with it, it’s not perfect, neither am I and neither should you be. Perfectionism will lead to stress and hurt your performance in the long run.
Who’s the skinny Santa Clause meant to be? It’s actually Socrates – an ancient Greek Philosopher, and I’m attempting to follow in his footsteps. More than a decade of exam marking has surely accelerated the balding and it’s a matter of time before the greying takes full effect.
The real aspect I’m striving to emulate though is the Socratic teaching approach. Most Philosophers made bold claims to explain natural phenomenon, but Socrates was more down to Earth… “true wisdom is knowing you know nothing at all.” In the end this back-fired and he got sentenced to death for making Athenians look foolish.

Around Christmas 2025 I sat down with my friend Lewis (A-level Physics Online) to give people a taster of what my new course would entail. If you can answer the questions correctly in the videos it’ll unlock some extra physical resources if you fully enrol on the course.
Lesson materials are posted on a goggle classroom, which includes copies of the powerpoints (pdfs for History of Science Lectures), various consolidation tasks for homework and extension/inspirational activities to push students to their limits.
Lesson 1 is summarised in this revision poster, also given to students, to be printed A3. This leads perfectly into lesson 2 on effective revision strategies, as I’ve found making mindmaps and posters like this to be truly beneficial, and the earlier students start doing this for their completed topics, the less stressful they will find revising in general.
Build up a set of revision posters like this one, and they can spend 5 minutes looking at it every couple of weeks to refresh and check if any gaps have appeared in their understanding. Doing this ensures they are always on top of their prior learning and will cut down on the stress and anxiety of revising two year’s worth of content ahead of the final exams.

When I ran open days at school, I’d pull out all the stops, smoke machines, plasma balls, strobe lighting and half my Lego models. I recently had a student faint into my arms thing as I demonstrated a tyre rolling up a ramp – inspired by this classic Honda Advert. The aim is to open student’s eyes to the possibilities of studying physics, as many have been put off it at GCSE, possibly due to uninspiring teaching that sticks rigidly to the textbook.
However, at the start of year 12, with class sizes in excess of 25, the aim is very different – scare off those who have picked it without realising how tough it’s going to be and aren’t willing to put in the hard work, before it’s too late to change course. Lesson 1 of this course follows that rationale. You’ve already decided to study Physics, which is awesome, but if you want me to help you get your best grade possible, then I need you to show me how serious you are.
That’s why in lesson 1 I focus on the two major battles I have every year – mastering sig figs and dealing with (combining) uncertainties. It’s boring, but important and not just because of the marks you’d lose if you cannot do it right. I’ll go in to the reasoning behind the rules so you actually understand and appreciate the rationale!
